COOCH BEHAR PANCHANAN BARMA UNIVERSITY, has been named after the great social reformer Thakur Panchanan Barma. Panchanan Barma, also known as Thakur Panchanan and Roy Saheb, was a Rajbanshi leader and reformer from Cooch Behar. He established Kshatriya Sabha in order to inculcate Brahminical values and practices among the people from Rajbanshi community in this region in particular, and in Bengal in general. Thakur Panchanan Barma (1866 - 1935) was born at Khalisamari village in erstwhile Cooch Behar State. He graduated from Victoria College, Cooch Behar - which was then affiliated with the University of Calcutta - with an honours in Sanskrit in 1893. Later he passed MA and LLB in 1897 and 1898 respectively from the same university.
The Government of West Bengal has established the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University under the Act passed on the floor of the State Legislative Assembly of West Bengal in the name “West Bengal Act XXI of 2012” & “ The Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University Act 2012” vide Kolkata Gazette No WB(Part-III)/2012/SAR-32 dated 16th August 2012.
The first academic session will commence from this year. It is proposed to start with six subjects, viz. Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Geography and Hindi in Post Graduate level. Admission notification will be published in this web site and in daily newspapers in the middle of June 2013.
A Certificate Course in Spanish Language will be introduced in this University.
Total examination system and syllabi have been prepared on the basis of standard international credit system so that credit transfer is possible from one corner of world to another part. This will facilitate the students to transfer from one university to another university easily in the world.
